Classical opera is a beautiful art, but certainly not easy. Yes, the singer must have a good voice, but it goes beyond that. They must also have the natural instinct to tap into their raw talent to become something extraordinary. And that’s what Gruffyd Roberts, 22, showed in this episode of Britain’s Got Talent.
The seemingly shy Welshman seemed in awe of the size of the audience in front of him as he stood back in front of the judges for his audition for BGT. Additionally, Gruffyd described his audition as “very, very nerve-wracking…I could feel my legs shaking as I sang.”
Simon an prompted Gruffyd to tell the public a bit about himself. Gruffyd proudly proclaimed that he was Welsh and lived with his grandmother. Simon stopped him at this point and asked him about his parents. This question has shaken the candidates. Gruffyd tried to explain why his parents weren’t in his life, but he was very visibly upset and started stuttering. Those extra emotions probably didn’t help him relax ahead of his big audition.
Simon wishing him good luck and starting the music to start. Gruffyd’s friends in the crowd then encouraged him as he took a deep breath and began to sing. His nerves and emotions were very noticeable, but behind the nerves lies an obvious opera talent. However, something select was missing.
After a few bars of the song, Simon raised his hand and motioned to stop the music. Simon said, “Gruffyd, I want to tell you something – because you’re very nervous. It’s very cold and mechanical for me. I feel there is more to it…
I want you to drop price for a second. Simon gave Gruffyd a second chance — a chance Simon doesn’t get very often — to sing a different song. The host gives Gruffyd a glass of furry water as the new song begins, and he visibly relaxes. As his friends hold their breath, Gruffyd opens his mouth and begins to sing “Nessun Dorma”.
This time there was a clear difference. The audience could tell that this song came from his soul this time. The emotion in the auditorium was almost palpable and began to build as the song continued. Tears can even be seen on a few people’s faces.
The crowd erupts in cheers and rises when he reaches the climax of the song. The standing ovation was backed by all four judges, and the crowd erupted when one of the judges slammed the “Golden Buzzer.” An emotional Gruffyd is almost instantly surrounded by cheering friends and family.
